The data are stored in an ESRI ArcGIS Version 9.2 geodatabase. This Congressional District feature class interprets the location and describes the boundaries of all Congressional Districts within Cook County, Illinois. Congressional Districts (CDs) in Cook County, Illinois are the 11 areas from which people are elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. After the apportionment of congressional seats among the states, based on census population counts, each state is responsible for establishing CDs for the purpose of electing representatives. Each CD is to be as equal in population to all other CDs in the state as practicable. Attribution for this feature class includes a Congressional District identifier. This feature class is current as of 2010. This dataset is projected using the Transverse Mercator map projection. The grid coordinate system used is the Illinois State Plane Coordinate System (Zone Number 1201), NAD83 with ground coordinates expressed in U.S. Survey Feet. The purpose of the feature class is to interpret the location of and describe Congressional Districts in Cook County, Illinois for general use by the public and to support internal business requirements of several County agencies. This feature class also supports summarization of existing data by these geographies, and acts as boundary file for thematic mapping. Using each textual description and map depiction of the Congressional District, the interpreted boundary of the Congressional District was digitized. The GIS layers used to facilitate the process included: 1. Cook County Hydrography Midlines 2. Cook County Hydrography Polygons 3. Cook County Street Midlines 4. Cook County Railroad Lines and Features 5. Cook County Municipalities 6. Public Land Survey System. Upon completion of the digitzation of each Congressional District, the feature was then attributed with a Congressional District identifier that was consistent with the value provided by the Illinois State Board of Elections.
